The Detroit Lions beat the Chicago Bears handily on Sunday, winning 40-32 at home thanks to a huge game from Reggie Bush. Bush rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries and caught four passes for 34 yards. He averaged 7.7 yards per carry.
How was Bush able to have so much success? Apparently some Bears players think ex-teammate Israel Idonije, who played for the Bears from 2004-2012, tipped off Detroit’s offense regarding their calls.
According to Bears reporter Michael C. Wright, Bush broke big runs every time the Bears ran their “power” stunt. A stunt is when defensive lineman alter their pass rush path in a coordinated fashion instead of going straight ahead, which is easier to block. The Bears said the Lions burned them whenever they ran the power stunt, which caused them to drop the play entirely.
“He totally knows our defense,” a Bears player told Wright.
The reasoning absolutely makes sense. Bush had some nice initial holes, though he ran incredibly well once he got to the second level of the defense. He broke tackles and made some outstanding moves and looked excellent overall, so he is responsible for a lot of the success.
But how dumb would the Bears have to be if they allowed an ex-teammate to still know their calls and plays? Brian Urlacher isn’t there, Lovie Smith isn’t there, yet they still are doing the same things? If there is a huge reversal in the outcome of the game the next time the team’s meet, we’ll have a good idea why.
