The Kansas City Chiefs handed out an enormous contract on Tuesday that set an NFL record for the position.

The Chiefs and Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith agreed to a four-year, $94 million deal, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Smith and the Chiefs got the deal done just ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for franchise tag contract extensions.

Smith’s new deal is a record at the guard position for both annual salary and guaranteed money. $70 million of Smith’s deal is guaranteed.

🏈G Robert Hunt $63M
🏈G Chris Lindstrom $62.7M

Smith has established himself as a vital part of Kansas City’s offensive line, and was selected to his first Pro Bowl last season. He even started as a rookie and has played in 67 of a possible 68 games in his first four NFL seasons.

A former sixth-round pick, the Chiefs valued Smith enough to use the franchise tag on him. Now he will anchor the offensive line for years to come, and will be paid very handsomely to do it.
