Chip Kelly is not ready to commit to Colin Kaepernick as the San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback for the future.
Asked after the Niners’ loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday whether Kaepernick would be the team’s starting QB next week, Kelly answered, “we’ll see.”
Though that’s not an indication that Kaepernick has lost the job after one week, it’s also not exactly a ringing endorsement.
In assessing the situation, Kelly really should have no reason to endorse Kaepernick as the starting QB.
Although he got off to a fast start with a long touchdown pass to Torrey Smith, Kaepernick finished just 13 of 29 for 189 yards and a touchdown. He did rush for 66 yards on eight attempts.
Kaepernick did not give the 49ers the spark they were looking for on offense, but he also wasn’t as horrendous as Blaine Gabbert had been. At this point, it seems that the team is unlikely to win much with either player at quarterback.
