Christian Hackenberg changed throwing motion without telling Todd Bowles?
Christian Hackenberg is fighting for his roster spot with the New York Jets, and he is making some changes to his throwing motion in an attempt to improve in his third NFL season. Apparently, he hasn’t told his head coach about them.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported on Thursday that Hackenberg is working on a revamped throwing motion with quarterback guru Jeff Christensen. Bowles confirmed the report over the weekend, but he claimed he had no knowledge of Hackenberg’s reworked mechanics until after the fact.
“He hasn’t talked to me about it. He just worked on it,” Bowles said, per Daniel Popper of the New York Daily News. “I’ve learned about it after that fact.”
While Bowles’ comments were surprising, Popper reports that the Jets were “fully aware” that Hackenberg was working with Christensen, even though he did not speak directly with Bowles about it. That’s a lot different from Hackenberg going off and doing something on his own without consulting the team.
The Jets have already waived one quarterback, and they are probably going to cut another one before the regular season. Hackenberg is doing everything he thinks will help him avoid being the next one on the chopping block.
