Colts have not yet made decision on Carson Wentz’s future?

Carson Wentz throws a pass

The Indianapolis Colts have given no indication that they are committed to Carson Wentz heading into next season, but apparently any reports of them making a final decision on the quarterback’s future are premature.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday that the Colts are likely to trade or release Wentz prior to March 18. He described Indy’s trade for Wentz as a “one-year marriage that went wrong.”

According to Stephen Holder of The Athletic, the Colts have yet to make a firm decision. It does not sound like they have ruled out bringing Wentz back in 2022.

Holder noted that the draft and free agency will be big factors in Wentz’s future. Mortensen may have simply been making the point that the Colts are expected to find an upgrade.

Colts general manager Chris Ballard gave his assessment of Wentz’s play after a disappointing end to the season. He did not speak like a man who has much confidence in his team’s quarterback. Owner Jim Irsay also may have taken a shot at Wentz on social media.

Even if the Colts have not made any final decisions, we would be surprised if they enter 2022 with Wentz as their starting QB.
