Report: Dak Prescott likely to be franchise tagged as contract talks go nowhere

The Dallas Cowboys have expressed a desire to sign all three of their core offensive skill players to long-term contract extensions, but Ezekiel Elliott is the only one who has received a new deal. Dak Prescott has been widely assumed to be the next man in line, but it does not sound like any progress has been made on that front.

Prescott is likely going to be franchise tagged by the Cowboys this offseason, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Sunday. The chances of a long-term extension being reached this late in the season are slim, and a source told Rapoport that there is “nothing going on” between Prescott and the Cowboys. The team’s bye week two weeks ago would have been a good opportunity to hammer out a new deal, but no progress was made.

The franchise tag would not necessarily mean Prescott is going to have to play under a one-year deal next year, as it could — and likely would — be used as a tool to buy more time for the two sides to negotiate. However, it is noteworthy that a deal seems no closer now than it was during the offseason.

Prescott supposedly turned down a massive offer from the Cowboys prior to the season, though details about guaranteed money were unclear. There has been talk that he has not pushed for a new deal because of other revenue streams he has managed to generate, so perhaps he is comfortable putting the pressure on the team by letting things drag out.
