Dan Campbell shares funny story about getting punched by key player

Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell says he got punched by one of his players this week, and he loved it.

The Lions held former Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow out of their Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to a partially torn pectoral. The hope was that, coupled with the team’s Week 5 bye, that would be enough time to get Ragnow healthy enough to play again.

Ragnow still wanted to play in Week 4, though. According to Campbell, Ragnow punched him against a wall at the team facility prior to the Seattle game to try to prove his readiness to play, and Campbell loved it.

Dan Campbell said he was walking thru facility last wk when out of nowhere "someone punches me against the wall, then I get punched again and I realize that it's Frank trying to show me that his pec is great. That's his way of telling me, 'Look how strong I am, it's good.'"

“Someone punches me against the wall, then I get punched again and I realize that it’s Frank trying to show me that his pec is great,” Campbell said. “That’s his way of telling me, ‘Look how strong I am, it’s good.'”

This kind of story is par for the course for Campbell, who is the ultimate football guy and loves stuff like this. It’s also not surprising — Ragnow is one of the toughest players around, having played through a vast array of injuries in 2024.

Ragnow was back at practice this week and is on track to return against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
