Darrelle Revis on Ryan Fitzpatrick: ‘We’re waiting for him to come back’

Ryan Fitzpatrick Jets

You can understand why star wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker want Ryan Fitzpatrick to remain with the New York Jets next season given all the success the group had in 2015, but how do the players on defense feel about the team’s current quarterback conundrum?

From the sound of it, Darrelle Revis wants Fitzpatrick back as badly as anyone.

“Ryan is a big part of our success,” Revis told reporters at minicamp Tuesday, according to Darryl Slater of NJ.com. “He definitely is. He came here and he’s broken a bunch of records in the quarterback category. He was a big part of our offense. This [contract standoff] has been going on all offseason, and we’re waiting for him to come back.”

With Fitzpatrick throwing a franchise record 31 touchdown passes last year, the Jets finished 10-6 and came within one win of reaching the postseason. When asked if the team needs Fitzpatrick back in order to duplicate that success, Revis responded carefully.

“I don’t make those decisions,” he said. “I definitely don’t. Those are not in my hands. We want him back, and we want to see him walk in this locker room.”

Fitzpatrick is reportedly willing to sign a one-year contract with the Jets, but they want to spread the money out to lessen the salary cap hit. The two sides still seem to be far apart.

If you want to get a better idea of how Revis feels about the possibility of Geno Smith being New York’s starting quarterback, this should give you a better idea. Fitzpatrick gives the Jets the best chance to win again, and all of their veteran players know it.
