Derek Carr’s older brother, David Carr, has spoken up about the New Orleans Saints quarterback’s sudden retirement.
Derek Carr announced his sudden retirement from the NFL last week due to a potentially degenerative shoulder injury. The 34-year-old was diagnosed with a labral tear in his right shoulder. You can read Derek Carr’s full statement on his retirement here.
On Tuesday, David Carr spoke to NFL Network reporters Ian Rapoport and Judy Battista about his younger sibling’s retirement. When asked about Derek possibly changing his mind down the line, David was firm in his response.
“I believe that he is done. … I can tell, just in the last couple of days, that he’s definitely done playing and he’s moved on,” David Carr said. “His family — his boys and his little girl — are getting older. They’re getting to the point that they want to have Dad around more. That means more to him than anything else.”
David shared that he got a sense of where Derek’s head was during a recent golf round. Throughout the 18 holes, Derek was said to have received several calls from well-wishers expressing gratitude for having crossed paths with him throughout his 11-year NFL career.
Derek Carr left a ton of money on the table with his decision, saving the Saints a massive amount in payroll. But with over $200 million in career earnings, Carr is far from hurting financially.
