Drake Maye suffers possible concussion on helmet-to-helmet hit

Drake Maye gets hit high by a defender

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye exited his team’s game against the New York Jets on Sunday after taking a hit to the head.

Maye had a nice 18-yard scramble on 2nd-and-10 late in the first quarter at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. He went into a slide but was still hit by Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood, who had already begun his tackle but made helmet-to-helmet contact with Maye.

No flag was thrown on the play. Maye remained in the game for several more plays before the Patriots punted. The rookie was replaced by Jacoby Brissett on New England’s next offensive possession.

Maye was evaluated for a concussion and ruled out before halftime.

Maye was 3/6 for 23 yards and had a 17-yard touchdown run before he exited the game. The No. 3 overall pick has injected some life into the Patriots’ offense since he was named the starter in Week 6. He will likely have to clear concussion protocol now in order to be available for next week’s game against the Tennessee Titans.
