Drake Maye extends ugly Tom Brady streak in Super Bowl

Drake Maye took a page out of Tom Brady’s Super Bowl playbook Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks, but not the kind New England Patriots fans would have wanted.

Maye looked out of his depth in the first quarter of Super Bowl 60 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The second-year quarterback went 4/5 for 34 yards in the opening period in two Patriots drives that resulted in punts. He also took a pair of sacks that lost his team 20 yards.

Patriots fans are more than familiar with their team looking out of sorts at the start of the Super Bowl. New England had not scored a touchdown in the first quarter in all nine of Tom Brady’s Super Bowl appearances as a Patriot. Maye extended that streak to 10.

The Patriots have played in NINE Super Bowls in the 2000s heading into Super Bowl LX – and they scored ZERO points in the first quarter of all but ONE of those games 🤔

The last 10 Patriots Super Bowl teams combined to score just 3 points total via a field goal in New England’s Super Bowl 52 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Being held scoreless isn’t the end of the world for the Patriots’ chances, considering Brady went 6-3 in the Super Bowl as a Patriot. Maye just needs to prove he can follow in his predecessor’s footsteps.

Maye did not have much success in the second quarter either, as the Patriots entered halftime trailing the Seahawks 9-0. Teams are 0-14 in Super Bowls when held scoreless at the break.
