A formal proposal was submitted ahead of the NFL owners this week calling for the tush push to be banned, but the rule is not going to be implemented at this time.
The Green Bay Packers submitted a formal proposal last month to ban the tush push, which has been made famous by Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles. The language of the proposal calls for implementing a rule that would “prohibit an offensive player from pushing a teammate who was lined up directly behind the snapper and receives the snap, immediately at the snap.” The play would result in a 10-yard penalty.
NFL owners decided on Tuesday to table the discussion surrounding the tush push. The proposal would need support from 24 of 32 team owners to pass. According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, half of the teams in the league would oppose the ban at this time.

That is obviously good news for teams that want to continue running the tush push. The Eagles benefit the most from the play, and their social media team had an appropriate reaction.

Longtime Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson also celebrated the news by posting, “Hate us cause they ain’t us!”

NFL owners have agreed that more information is needed about the tush push before there is an official vote on the ban. There have been some concerns raised about the play posing an injury risk, though there is no known data to support that at this time.
Even if the tush push ban were to pass, the way the language of the proposal is written might allow for the Eagles and other teams to support a loophole. If at least 16 teams are opposed to banning the play, however, it seems highly unlikely that there will be any new rule related to it in 2025.
