The New York Giants on Tuesday signed Russell Wilson to a 1-year contract, and the team’s fans aren’t exactly thrilled with the move.
Wilson is getting a 1-year deal with $10.5 million guaranteed that can be worth up to $21 million. He threw for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns and 5 interceptions in 11 games for Pittsburgh last season. The Steelers went 6-5 in his starts. Wilson was fine for Pittsburgh and mediocre with the Denver Broncos before that. He’s now 36 and has certainly lost the allure he had when he was the Seahawks’ quarterback during their strong run in the 2010s.
Giants fans believe this was a move aimed at improving in the short-term, which is not what they feel the team needs. Further, they feel it will end with coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen being fired.

This is why lame ducks are terrible for NFL teams more than any other sport

Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll added Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston just so they can win 7ish games and try to save their jobs
Russ might be fine – good, even – but these are the types of win-now moves that you get when your coach/GM get a playoff mandate, as @MikeGarafolo prev. reported.

Schoen/Daboll should be making long-term moves instead of trying to cobble together a 9-win team. https://t.co/qdcMZia4tJ
Brian Daboll, you are out of a job https://t.co/Ezblx7edSb

This is what happens when you tell a 3-14 HC/GM tandem they have to win ASAP.

There is a very real chance that retaining Daboll/Schoen for the sake of continuity set the Giants franchise back even more years than it already was.
I don't think Daboll and Schoen will last the entire 2025 season. https://t.co/MCifjmkgrF

If Russ starts, Daboll/Schoen are definitely getting fired because the team will be terrible https://t.co/Hu6NtAlORe

Daboll and Schoen will be fired by seasons end … https://t.co/Bp7bkXvQeY

Daboll has been the Giants’ head coach for three seasons. The team went 9-7-1 and won a playoff game in his first season, which seemed to have bought him some extra job security. He was retained despite the team going 3-14 last season for their second losing year in a row. He was hired by GM Joe Schoen, who is also entering his fourth season leading the team.
The Giants now have a quarterback room that includes Wilson, Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. They could still add a rookie quarterback during the draft.
