The San Francisco Giants are giving it another go with an old pal.
The Giants announced on Friday that they are bringing back veteran lefty Drew Pomeranz on a one-year Major League contract. Righty pitcher Mason Black is being optioned to Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move.
Pomeranz is an 11-year MLB veteran who already pitched for the Giants during the 2019 season. Prior to that, he was an All-Star for the San Diego Padres in 2016 and then went on to win the World Series title with the Boston Red Sox in 2018.
Now 35 years old, Pomeranz has not pitched in the majors since the 2021 season (after undergoing multiple surgeries to repair a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow). But he had spent time with both the Los Angeles Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers this season on minor-league contracts, posting a 6.00 ERA over eight Triple-A appearances for the latter organization. With the Giants’ winter pitching additions having yet to pay off, they have opted to take a flier on Pomeranz for a second Major League stint with them.
