James Harrison says sons ‘didn’t earn’ participation trophies

HBO’s “Real Sports” recently aired a show on the topic of participation trophies and the role they can play in either helping to raise self esteem or creating a feeling of entitlement. Based on an Instagram post, we know James Harrison is not a fan of trophies handed out that were not earned.

On Saturday, Harrison posted the above photo of trophies received by his sons. He also included the following caption, which explains his thoughts on awards like these.

I came home to find out that my boys received two trophies for nothing, participation trophies! While I am very proud of my boys for everything they do and will encourage them till the day I die, these trophies will be given back until they EARN a real trophy. I’m sorry I’m not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned and I’m not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best…cause sometimes your best is not enough, and that should drive you to want to do better…not cry and whine until somebody gives you something to shut u up and keep you happy. #harrisonfamilyvalues

The debate over recognition of this nature in youth sports has been a hot button topic of late and it’s certainly possible Harrison’s feeling of having things be earned is reflective of his journey to being the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.

Harrison did not come from one of college football’s traditional powerhouses, having attended Kent State. He also was not drafted in 2002. Harrison then spent time on the Steelers practice squad, had a brief stint with the Ravens, and played in NFL Europe before joining the Steers. To say Harrison has “earned” the accolades he’s received would be an understatement considering he was seen by some as too short to play linebacker and not heavy enough for the defensive line.
