Jason McCourty an ‘ideal match’ with Patriots?

The Tennessee Titans informed Jason McCourty on Thursday that he is being released, and it would not be a surprise if the veteran cornerback explores the possibility of teaming up with his twin brother next season.

McCourty’s brother Devin, a Pro Bowl safety, is one of the top players on the New England Patriots’ defense. Mike Reiss of ESPN.com wrote on Friday that Jason McCourty and the Patriots seem like an “ideal match,” and he explained why.

McCourty would provide quality insurance, dependability, experience and steadiness, and maybe even potentially a No. 2 option should (Malcolm) Butler ultimately wind up playing elsewhere in 2017. The Patriots had previously explored the possibility of trading for him two seasons ago. …

… Because of that, it sets up a scenario that the McCourty brothers — twins Jason and Devin — have discussed in the past: The possibility of playing together in the NFL for the first time.

As Reiss notes, Jason McCourty has also never appeared in a playoff game in his eight-year career. He has to be at least somewhat envious of his brother winning multiple championships and getting to play in the postseason virtually every year, so Jason could be willing to take slightly less for the Patriots than he would elsewhere.

New England signed Stephon Gilmore to a five-year deal at the start of free agency, but they lost last year’s No. 2 cornerback in Logan Ryan and still have to sort out the Malcolm Butler situation. If the most recent report we heard about Butler is true, the Pats could be in need of another starter opposite Gilmore. Adding another member of the McCourty family makes sense.
