There were times during their win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday that the San Francisco 49ers may have thought they were playing a home game. AT&T Stadium in Arlington was loaded with Niners fans, which was obvious when a loud roar came over the crowd after each of Tony Romo’s three first-half interceptions. Jerry Jones must not have heard it.
When Jones was informed after the game that roughly half of the 91,174 in attendance were cheering for Colin Kaepernick and company, the Cowboys owner became visibly irritated.
“First of all, I don’t acknowledge that there were half of them there.” he said, via Tim McMahon of ESPN.com. “Did you count them?”
Jones was then assured that there was a sea of burgundy and gold all over his $1.2 billion stadium. He was also asked if the number of Niners fans indicates that his team has a marketing problem.
“BS,” he snapped. “I know you didn’t count them. Anyway, nothing went through my mind. I was looking at the game. Listen, I’m interested in the football game and what went on with the game. It’s not good when you don’t win — from any perspective, marketing or otherwise. I had my eye on those turnovers and interest on those turnovers.”
It’s fun to pretend, isn’t it? While the Cowboys have finished 8-8 each of the last two seasons, they usually have as strong a following as any team in sports. The fact that so many people were cheering for the opposition at the home opener has to be concerning, whether Jerruh wants to admit it or not.
