Jets coach has honest take on team’s ‘commitment’ to Justin Fields

New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is staying loyal to Justin Fields, at least for now.

Fields was objectively horrible during the Jets’ dispiriting Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos during Sunday’s NFL London Games matchup. He was sacked a whopping 10 times for 55 lost yards, which were both greater than his 9 completions for 45 yards as a passer.

During his postgame press conference, Glenn was asked if Fields would remain the starter for Week 7. The Jets coach flamed the reporter for asking what he felt was a silly question.

A much calmer Glenn faced reporters on Monday and had a more level-headed answer when asked about his “commitment” to Fields.

“I thought about this a lot last night. I thought about the question that was asked,” Glenn said.

“When you look at what Justin did, the games that he played, I didn’t think he was bad at all. I actually thought he did some pretty good things in those four games. In this fifth game, he took a step back.

“I’m with you guys 100%, and we can’t have that. We have to get better than that, and he knows that. And he knows that better than anyone. I don’t think you just try to bench a player after having one true bad game, because I thought the other games, he played fairly well.”

Fields has had some decent stat lines across his five starts in a Jets uniform. But he puts up most of his numbers when his team is already trailing by a couple of scores.

With the Jets being the only winless team remaining in the NFL, it’s fair to question whether the team would want a change at its most important position. There have already been rumblings that some of Fields’ Jets teammates already want him benched.
