Joe Flacco: Backup QB role ‘not the most fun’

Joe Flacco

Joe Flacco lost his starting quarterback job to Lamar Jackson down the stretch, and it’s fair to say he doesn’t seem particularly enthusiastic about it.

Flacco said Friday that sitting on the bench to start the playoffs isn’t his idea of fun, but didn’t outright criticize the decision.

“I don’t know if it’s going to be any more different or not,” Flacco said of serving as a playoff backup, via Jamison Hensley of ESPN. “It’s definitely not the most fun position in the world. It is what it is.”

Flacco is a veteran and a Super Bowl winner, so you can’t blame him for feeling a bit alienated. That said, you also can’t blame the Ravens for doing what they have done. A back injury sidelined Flacco and allowed Jackson to make the job his own. He’s gone 6-1 as a starter and the offense has been much more dangerous with him under center.

Reports indicate that, in all likelihood, the Ravens will move on from Flacco after the season. It’s the obvious and clear solution for both parties, whose partnership has clearly run its course.
