Johnny Manziel lied to Browns about date of party video

Johnny Manziel

Johnny Manziel was demoted by the Cleveland Browns to third string this week in part because he lied about when the video of him partying took place.

After the video of him partying during the bye week took place, Manziel tried to sell the public on the notion that the video was old. A DJ even told a media member it was old.

Apparently Manziel wasn’t just trying to use that excuse on the public; FOX’s Jay Glazer says he used that excuse with the Browns, too.

Glazer reported during the Eagles-Lions pregame show that Manziel lied to the team about when the video was filmed and even recruited friends to lie too.

“It’s the trust, the accountability part of it,” Browns head coach Mike Pettine said Wednesday. “This is where we had an obvious shortcoming.”

Manziel is lucky the team hasn’t cut him yet. They say they won’t yet, with Pettine calling it a “hurdle” to overcome.

“We are going to continue to support him, help him and coach him in every way possible to get him where he needs to be,” said Pettine. “This is a decision that I know, for him in particular, stings in the short term but feel it is an absolutely necessary to maximize his chance for future success.”

Even with Pettine saying all these things, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Browns eventually release Manziel.
