Jordy Nelson reportedly wants $10 million a season in new contract

Jordy NelsonJordy Nelson has been a bargain for the Green Bay Packers and would like to tilt the scale in his favor on his next contract.

Nelson signed four-year deal for nearly $14 million in 2011 and is due to make around $2.55 million this season, which is the final year of his current contract. ESPN’s Rob Demovsky reports that Nelson would like to make at least $10 million per season in his next deal.

Nelson has been a big part of the Packers’ offense the past three seasons and is underpaid relative to his production. He’s had 202 catches, 3,322 yards and 30 touchdowns the past three seasons despite missing four games in 2012 because of injury.

Roddy White, who has been one of the top receivers in the league the past seven seasons, got a three-year extension from the Falcons Thursday that calls for him to be paid around $9 million per season. Nelson has not been an impact player as long as White has, but he’s younger and has had similar production the past few years.

The issue for Green Bay is that they will also have to re-sign Randall Cobb, who is due for a major pay increase. If Nelson doesn’t settle for less — say in the $7-8 million range — the Packers might not be able to retain both players.
