Josh McCown: Jets’ solid start ‘not surprising’ to those with team

Some thought the New York Jets were going to spend the 2017 season tanking, but a 3-2 start makes it abundantly clear that those predictions were off the mark. That has been surprising to many — but if you ask quarterback Josh McCown, it hasn’t been to those in the room.

McCown told PFT Live on Tuesday that those on the team and with the team expected to be much better than public perception indicated.

“For us inside the building it’s not surprising,” McCown said, via Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. “We began to work back in April and May, putting our team together and working together and building our team with a goal in mind. Obviously there’s a narrative outside the building that’s going on, but when you come to work you don’t really subscribe to that. You’re with your brothers in the locker room and you’re going to go after this goal. So that’s been our focus and when you do find success I don’t think for us, as with any team, surprise about it. It’s the way we work. It’s what we were expecting to happen.”

Jets players have always been optimistic. It would be worrying if they didn’t think they had the chance to surprise, or at least avoided publicly saying so. Still, it’s fair to say that nobody expected the Jets to be doing this well.
