JuJu Smith-Schuster’s mom takes shot at Steelers
JuJu Smith-Schuster is already fitting in like a glove with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs … in terms of having family members going off on social media.
Sammy Toa-Schuster, the mother of the star receiver, dissed the Pittsburgh Steelers in a post to her Instagram Story over the weekend, saying they no longer wanted her son. The context was Toa-Schuster commenting on how many followers she had lost after Smith-Schuster signed with Kansas City.
“We JuJu & I fought to stay in Pittsburgh bc it was never about money,” Toa-Schuster wrote. “It was about loyalty. But I guess Steelers had a new boyfriend in mind. They didn’t want JuJu anymore.
“FYI Pittsburgh!!” she added. “We fought to stay!!! If your [sic] not wanted then why? stay!!! Thank you to the loyal family (fans) who are still following me!!! Steeler Nations!!!”

Smith-Schuster was the Steelers’ second-round draft pick back in 2017 and became a Pro Bowler by his second season. But injuries and ineffectiveness took toll on him in subsequent seasons, as both Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool overtook Smith-Schuster in the pecking order. Smith-Schuster also created distractions for the Steelers with his non-football antics.
If Toa-Schuster is right that the Steelers no longer wanted her son, it may have been partly his own doing. For the Chiefs next season though, the 25-year-old Smith-Schuster already seems committed to changing his ways.
