Kirk Cousins linked to 3 teams via trade

The Atlanta Falcons have been hoping to trade Kirk Cousins since they committed to Michael Penix Jr. as their starting quarterback, and there are at least three teams that might have interest in acquiring the veteran during the NFL Draft.

In a draft buzz column that was published on Wednesday, Dianna Russini of The Athletic listed the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings as potential suitors for Cousins.

Minnesota is viewed as the “least likely scenario” because of the presence of JJ McCarthy. Cousins has a full no-trade clause, and he almost certainly does not want to wind up in a situation with another young quarterback breathing down his neck.

The Browns acquired Kenny Pickett in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers last month. They also signed Joe Flacco in free agency, but they may view Cousins as an upgrade over both players. Cousins probably would view himself as having a decent chance to beat out Pickett and/or Flacco for a starting job.

Pittsburgh is the most intriguing option for Cousins. The Steelers are still waiting on a decision from Aaron Rodgers, and there has been talk that they could draft Shedeur Sanders if he is still on the board when they pick at No. 21.

Even if the Steelers were to draft Sanders, they might prefer to have him sit on the bench for at least a season. Cousins would make sense as a bridge option in Pittsburgh if Rodgers does not wind up signing.

In order for a Cousins trade to come together, the Falcons will probably have to lower their asking price. They would then need Cousins to waive his no-trade clause, though that should not be much of an issue if a team were to offer him an opportunity to compete for a starting job.

Cousins is entering the second year of a 4-year, $180 million contract he signed with Atlanta a year ago. He threw 18 touchdown passes and 16 interceptions for the Falcons in 14 games last season before being benched.
