Report: Kirk Herbstreit being pursued for top NFL analyst role

Kirk Herbstreit smiles

Amazon remains committed to landing a big name to do analysis for its “Thursday Night Football” package, and a new report suggests they might be targeting the most prominent college football analyst in the business.

Kirk Herbstreit is Amazon’s latest target for Thursday night games, according to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post. Notably, Herbstreit’s contract with ESPN is reportedly written in such a way that he could theoretically remain with the network in his current role while simultaneously calling NFL games for another entity. ESPN could try to dispute that, however, depending on how determined they are to keep Herbstreit exclusively.

Herbstreit makes roughly $6 million annually with ESPN, according to the report. He would certainly get more than that from Amazon if he got the position, at least based on what they’ve been willing to pay others.

In the past, Herbstreit has indicated a willingness to call more NFL games, so he might jump at this opportunity. Whether he leaves college football behind completely or sorts out some sort of arrangement with ESPN will make for an intriguing storyline if Amazon does go through with this.
