Leonard Fournette makes his free agent decision

Leonard Fournette has signed a new contract with his old team.

Fournette on Tuesday agreed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports. The veteran running back could make up to $24 million with incentives.

Fournette did not sign with a team during the initial free agent rush last week, and that may have been because his contract demands were a bit unrealistic. He hinted on social media that he feels he is a top-five player at his position, but the market did not reflect that.

With an average annual salary of $7 million, Fournette now ranks just outside the top 10 in terms of highest-paid running backs in the NFL. Still, that is great money for a 27-year-old at a position that many teams choose not to spend big on.

Fournette had 1,266 total scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns last season. He also continued to live up to his “Playoff Lenny” nickname. Fournette scored two touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round.

With Tom Brady reversing course on his retirement, the Bucs are once again trying to retain all of their core players.
