Michael Irvin: Cowboys need Ezekiel Elliott to win Super Bowl
Michael Irvin played a position that is considered far more important in today’s NFL than the one Ezekiel Elliott plays, but the Hall of Fame wide receiver does not believe the Dallas Cowboys can get to where they want to be without Elliott.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made headlines recently when he basically said he believes the team can win a Super Bowl without Elliott, who is currently holding out for a new contract. In a brief interview with TMZ this week, Irvin spoke about how badly Jones wants to win another championship and said he won’t do it without Elliott.
“I know for a fact before Jerry Jones (leaves), he wants to drink the sweet nectar of a championship again. And that nectar he will not partake in without Ezekiel Elliott,” Irvin declared. “You may win games, you may sell tickets, and you may make some money, but that nectar you will not drink without Ezekiel Elliott.”
Irvin also said he does not blame Elliott for trying to seize an opportunity with his contract.
“The NFL has told all running backs over and over again, ‘We will squeeze you, we will use you, and we will discard you,'” Irvin said. “So, now, he’s saying, ‘Let me get mine while I’m riding the wave hot.’ I understand that.”
It’s worth noting that this is not the first time Irvin has gone to bat for Elliott, so the two appear to have a close relationship. Elliott has two years remaining on his current deal and is threatening to go with the nuclear option if he doesn’t get a new contract, but it still seems doubtful that he will follow through.
