Clayton Beathard, the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback CJ Beathard, died early Saturday morning after he was stabbed outside a bar in Nashville. Following a manhunt that lasted multiple days, the prime suspect in the murder was arrested on Christmas Day.
Michael Mosley, 23, surrendered after being surrounded by police at his home on Wednesday in Ashland City, Tenn., the Metro Nashville Police Department announced. He was charged with killing Beathard and 21-year-old Paul Trapeni III.

Mosley is accused of stabbing another person in the eye and arm, which is why he was charged with one count of attempted criminal homicide in addition to two counts of criminal homicide.
Police say Mosley is a convicted felon who “has a violent criminal past.” He was free on $5,000 bond at the time of the stabbings after being arrested for aggravated assault stemming from an alleged beating of a 37-year-old woman at a Nashville Walmart a year ago. Mosley was also convicted on multiple counts of armed robbery in February 2018 and sentenced to two concurrent six-year prison terms. He has been accused and convicted of committing numerous other crimes. Given his lengthy rap sheet, it’s surprising he was even out of prison.
It was originally reported that the fatal stabbing of Beathard and Trapeni stemmed from a dispute that began over a woman, and police confirmed that.
“(Mosley’s) actions led to a verbal dispute initially inside the bar, which led then to a physical fight outside the bar. The fight traveled across the street from the bar,” Nashville Metropolitan PD spokesman Don Aaron said. “During the fight, the investigation shows that Mosley was armed with a sharp object and during that fight, the two victims were fatally stabbed. Their friend, a 21-year-old, was also injured.”
Clayton Beathard was a junior quarterback at Long Island University this season. His brother CJ attended Iowa. The two are the grandsons of former NFL executive Bobby Beathard.
