Mike Singletary reportedly expected to get head coaching job

Mike SingletaryWill a familiar name be back in the head coaching ranks next season?

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Mike Singletary will be a head coaching candidate next year and that “several high-ranking people believe he’ll have a job in 2015.”

Singletary had a head coaching stint with the San Francisco 49ers that did not go well. Singletary took over for Mike Nolan as the Niners’ interim head coach in 2008 and went 5-4, which convinced management to let him keep the job. He went 8-8 the next season and was fired amid a 5-10 campaign in 2010.

Singletary went on to become a defensive assistant on Leslie Frazier’s Minnesota Vikings staff from 2011-2013. Frazier was fired after last season, and Singletary has been out of football this season.

If Singeltary is in fact a candidate for head coaching jobs, I really don’t see why. He was not a good coach with the Niners, and his poor job was magnified after Jim Harbaugh immediately turned the same team into an NFC power after taking over. This report is nothing short of a shocker for me.
