Myles Garrett no longer feels like a ‘robot’ in Browns’ defense
Nobody seems happier about the change to the Cleveland Browns’ defense than Myles Garrett.
The Browns fired Gregg Williams as defensive coordinator and have replaced him with Steve Wilks. Wilks is opening things up more and allowing the players more freedom and fewer restrictions, according to Garrett.
“It’s more concise. It allows for a little more freedom within this game. Let’s go out there and be a player and not feel like a robot at times,” Garrett gold Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot on Tuesday.
That’s a big difference from what Garrett felt under Williams. The former No. 1 overall pick said in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Dan Pompei last month that Williams was limiting him to two moves as a pass rusher.
“[Former defensive coordinator and interim head coach] Gregg [Williams] was more like: ‘You win with these two moves. I don’t want to see anything else out of you.’ It’s kind of hard with two moves. I feel like you can’t always be so predictable,” Garrett gold Pompei.
Maybe Williams wanted to keep things simple, but that does seem to be detrimental to a player’s creativity and overall ability.
Garrett had 13.5 sacks and 44 tackles last season, making his first Pro Bowl. Maybe we’ll see an even bigger explosion in those numbers in 2019.
