Shedeur Sanders fell victim to a cruel prank as he shockingly slid down the board during the NFL Draft, and the league is trying to figure out how that happened.
Sanders held a huge draft party in Colorado and streamed much of the event live on social media. Even after he fell out of the first round altogether, he still continued the festivities on Day 2 of the draft.
At one point during the second round on Saturday, Sanders received a phone call that many people believed was “the call.” The person on the phone claimed to be New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis and said the team was about to draft Sanders with the 40th overall pick.
Sanders knew something about the call was off, and it became obvious it was a prank when the Saints drafted former Louisville quarterback Tyler Shough. You can see the video here.
The phone number that Sanders was pranked on was one that was supposedly only given out to NFL teams. A league spokesperson told Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on Sunday that the NFL is looking into how the phone number leaked.
There have been rumors circulating on social media that the person who made the prank call might be related to an NFL coach, though that has not been confirmed. If that were the case, it would explain how the phone number was obtained.
Sanders was finally drafted in the fifth round by the Cleveland Browns with the 144th overall pick. There has been talk that he fell so far after bombing his pre-draft interviews, but the former Buffaloes quarterback had a great response to that.
