NFL will play Monday night game in Mexico City in 2016

Roger Goodell

The NFL will play a Monday Night Football game in Mexico City in 2016, commissioner Roger Goodell announced Friday.

The game will take place on November 21 at the Estadio Azteca between the Raiders and the Texans, according to a league statement.

“Expanding our International Series of regular-season games to Mexico marks an important step in our continued international growth,” Goodell said. “We have a tremendous, passionate fan base in Mexico and we know the atmosphere on game day will be outstanding.”

Of course, the NFL goes to London multiple times annually now to the point where there is interest in putting a full-time franchise there. Mexico City is a bit different, however: the NFL has visited once before, in 2005, when Arizona beat San Francisco 31-14, a game attended by over 103,000. The NBA has also hosted games in Mexico City, though they haven’t always gone well.
