Oddsmakers reveal favorite to land Packers’ head coaching job

Josh McDaniels

The Green Bay Packers are looking for a new head coach who can get the most out of the remainder of Aaron Rodgers’ prime, and it is no surprise that the favorite to land the job comes from an offensive background.

Bovada released odds on Monday for who will be named the next head coach in Green Bay, and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels tops the list at +170. Following him closely are Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator John DeFilippo.

McDaniels would be an intriguing choice for Green Bay, as he has spent years working with an elite quarterback in Tom Brady. The Packers have to like his experience in that area, though applying it as an offensive coordinator is much different from serving in a head coaching role.

Of course, McDaniels infamously backed out of a verbal agreement to become the next head coach of the Indianapolis Colts last offseason, and some took that to mean the Patriots told him he is the coach-in-waiting behind Bill Belichick. However, that may have been more about McDaniels getting cold feet and not thinking Indy was the right fit.

Riley is actually three months younger than Rodgers, so it’s fair to wonder if he’s the right man for the job. Plus, he seems more likely to fill another NFL head coaching vacancy if he decides to leave Oklahoma.

It has been widely assumed that Rodgers will have a say in choosing Green Bay’s next coach, but Packers president Mark Murphy indicated on Monday that Rodgers is not pulling strings in that department.
