Philip Rivers’ NFL comeback may be over as a player, but there may be more to come in another capacity.
Several teams have done some background research on Rivers as a head coaching candidate, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. While this also happened last year, Rivers was not all that interested at that time.
Rivers is even believed to have a shot at one or more interviews for a head coaching job this offseason if he wants the opportunity. It remains unclear, however, if he would even accept an interview, though teams seem to hope that his brief return to playing helps spark his interest.
The 44-year-old is fresh off a remarkable comeback with the Indianapolis Colts. While he did not win a game, he certainly did not embarrass himself and generally kept the Colts in the games he played. The whole thing made for a pretty remarkable story, but also demonstrated that Rivers is still capable of connecting with modern NFL players, and has an excellent mind for the game.
Rivers does have some coaching experience, albeit at the high school level. His players seem to love him, though it is obviously a huge jump from coaching at that level to operating in the NFL.
