Quarterback Philip Rivers has long been retired from the NFL, but he made it official on Monday with a noteworthy gesture.

Rivers officially signed a one-day contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in order to retire as a member of the team. The Chargers paid tribute to Rivers in a video interview where he announced that he was “retiring a Charger.”

Rivers last played in 2020 with the Indianapolis Colts, and announced his retirement at the end of that season. There have been some occasional rumors that he might make a comeback, but nothing ever came of that.

The former No. 4 overall pick spent all but one of his NFL seasons with the Chargers organization. He holds virtually every passing record in franchise history, including yards (59,271) and touchdowns (397).

Rivers has worked as a high school football coach since retiring from the NFL. His son is drawing interest from at least one SEC school on the recruiting trail.
