The Oakland Raiders are reportedly set to hire Jack Del Rio as their next head coach, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.
Del Rio spent the last three seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos. Prior to that, he was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003 to 2011.
Del Rio, a former NFL linebacker, compiled a record of 68-71 in eight-plus seasons in Jacksonville and led the Jags to the postseason in 2005 and 2007. As Ian Rapoport of NFL Network notes, he is the only candidate to be called back for a second interview with the Raiders, which likely means the team has made its decision.
The Broncos ranked No. 3 in the NFL this season with just 305.2 yards allowed per game. However, they ranked just 16th with 22.1 points allowed per game.
As we previously shared with you, Del Rio grew up a Raiders fan and his parents are season ticket holders. His brother also works security for at the Coliseum.
Del Rio wasn’t Oakland’s first choice, but the guy they really wanted never had any intention of taking the job.
