Reggie Wayne signs with Patriots

Reggie WayneThe heated rivalry between the Patriots and Colts got even more interesting on Monday when New England signed Reggie Wayne to a one-year contract.

Adam Schefter, who reported that Wayne was in Foxboro taking a physical over the weekend, was first with the news.

Wayne, 36, was relatively productive last season coming off a torn tricep injury that forced him to miss nine games in 2013. He caught 64 balls for 779 yards and has been adamant that he wants to play another season despite being released by the Colts.

The Patriots have been dealing with a rash of injuries at the wide receiver position this offseason. Most notably, Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell — two of Tom Brady’s top targets last season — have missed time during the preseason with various ailments.

Wayne has a reputation for showing up to training camp in incredibly unique fashion, so we’ll have to see if that continues in New England leading up to the regular season. His skills have greatly declined, but Wayne is an intelligent player who should pick up the Patriots’ offense rather quickly.
