Report: Rams, Aaron Donald close to record deal

Aaron Donald Rams

Aaron Donald has continued his holdout even as the third week of the preseason comes to a close. Though there is no new deal between him and the Los Angeles Rams yet, a report says the two sides are close to a record-setting deal.

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio says the two sides “remain on the verge of a deal that will make him the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.” The deal hasn’t been completed yet, but Florio says it will likely pay Donald around $22 million per season, with around $80 million in guarantees.

The Rams have given out big contracts to players like Brandin Cooks and Todd Gurley this year. Even Rob Havenstein got a sizable extension from the team. Meanwhile, arguably the best defensive player in the NFL was sitting on the final year of his rookie deal, which would have left him severely underpaid.

Donald is deserving of a big contract, and it seems like the Rams are going to resolve that matter. There should be some urgency to get it done soon since the Rams open the season on Sept. 10.
