The Baltimore Ravens chose to re-sign Robert Griffin III this offseason because they believe having him around will be valuable for Lamar Jackson, but that does not mean the former No. 2 overall pick is ready to accept his fate as a career backup.
TMZ caught up with RG3 this week and asked him if he will be competing for a backup job behind Jackson in 2019, and he seemed hesitant to admit that there is no path to him earning the starting job.
“Anybody that signs in the league is never content being a backup,” Griffin said. “This is just part of the rebuilding process for me. It started last year when I moved from QB3 to QB2. I have an opportunity to play and help this franchise any way they need me, but by no means am I content with where I’m at.”
Griffin only recently turned 29, so it would not be completely unheard of for him to earn a starting job again someday. However, it is highly unlikely that he will do that in Baltimore without an injury to Jackson. The Ravens parted ways with Joe Flacco this offseason because they are committed to developing Jackson, who was their first-round pick a year ago.
Some would argue that Jackson’s style of play makes him more susceptible to injury than some of his counterparts, but we know Baltimore’s new offensive coordinator doesn’t subscribe to that. In any event, Griffin sounds like he will be ready if his number is called next season.
