Cam Newton has yet to acknowledge publicly that he used poor judgment when he made a sexist remark toward a reporter on Wednesday, but Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera shared his thoughts on the subject.
During his press conference on Thursday, Rivera said Newton “made a mistake.” He also noted that Newton told Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer privately that he should not have said what he did, though Rivera stopped short of saying Cam apologized.

“Cam made a mistake. I understand he had a conversation where he pretty much said he shouldn’t have said what he said,” Rivera said. “As far as I’m concerned, what I’d like to do is talk about getting ready for the Detroit Lions.”
Rodrigue asked a perfectly valid question about the routes Devin Funchess has been running, to which Newton replied that it is “funny” hearing a female talk about routes. The reporter said she spoke with Newton after the exchange but that things only got worse.
Newton has already been dropped as an endorser of one product in the wake of his remarks.
