Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton summed up his team’s loss on Tuesday in four simple words.
On Tuesday, Payton opened up about the Broncos’ 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The coach said the performance was “disappointing,” but did not stop there.
“Certainly a slap in the face,” Payton said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “When you come off training camp and your offseason program, it’s one thing to lose in a hard-fought game where you feel like you played well. I don’t feel like we played up to our standard, and certainly that starts with us as coaches, myself.”
Expectations were high for the Broncos coming off an AFC Championship appearance last year. Bo Nix was intercepted on the first drive, however, and the Chiefs were largely in control of the game. The fact that it was a divisional contest only makes it worse.
Nix himself was just as blunt in assessing his team’s performance. They should be motivated going into Week 2 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
