The chorus for pass interference to become a reviewable play continues to grow, with New Orleans coach Sean Payton the latest to hop on the bandwagon.
Payton called on the discussion to intensify after his team was hit with a third quarter pass interference penalty against his team that would have forced the Carolina Panthers into a fourth down.
Payton said if he had been able, he would have challenged the call.
“It has been (discussed) and for good reason, and let’s hope that that at some point is (addressed) sooner than later,” Payton said Monday, via Josh Katzenstein of NOLA.com. “Listen, it’s been brought up and discussed by a number of clubs, and I think the Competition Committee needs to spend a lot more time thinking about that specific call is so critical to get right.”
Pass interference has always been a controversial penalty, and one that has driven coaches nuts. Even Sunday in other games it proved controversial. Of course, the key question is how you address controversial non-calls, not just controversial flags. That more than anything else is at the heart of numerous arguments.
