The Washington Commanders are bringing in a player for a tryout who has a strong connection to the franchise.

Gabriel Taylor, the younger brother of former Washington safety Sean Taylor, has accepted an invitation to the Commanders’ rookie minicamp.

The news was shared on Sunday night by Rice University, which is where Gabriel played in college.

Gabriel played five seasons at Rice. He had 52 total tackles, 3 interceptions, 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles last year.

Sean Taylor was one of the best safeties in the NFL for four seasons after Washington drafted him with the fifth overall pick out of Miami in 2004. He was murdered on Nov. 26, 2007 during a home invasion. Taylor was shot in the leg and died the following day from his injuries. His fiancee, Jackie García, and 18-month-old daughter were home at the time of the incident but unharmed.

The elder Taylor made the Pro Bowl twice and was an All-Pro in 2007.

The Commanders unveiled a memorial exhibit to Sean in 2022 that was widely criticized by Commanders fans. That was when the team was still owned by Dan Snyder, and the team’s new ownership group has since vowed to properly honor Taylor.
