Steelers rookie Anthony McFarland taking Le’Veon Bell’s old number
A Pittsburgh Steelers running back will be wearing No. 26 in 2020, even if it’s not Le’Veon Bell.
Anthony McFarland, Pittsburgh’s 4th round pick, has opted to wear No. 26 with the Steelers. He clarified that it’s not meant as disrespectful to Bell, a former All-Pro with Pittsburgh.
“I watch his game, I study his film as somebody who’s been a great back in the league for a long time,” McFarland said Saturday, via Chris Adamski of TribLive. “It’s definitely me looking up at him and not a sign of disrespect.”
Bell’s departure from Pittsburgh was acrimonious, though ex-teammates claim that there are no hard feelings. McFarland probably hopes he can make Steelers fans forget Bell entirely. The bar is pretty high considering how good Bell was in Pittsburgh.
