Surprising MetLife Stadium injury data emerges

Malik Nabers stays down after suffering a knee injury

NFL players clamoring for changes to the MetLife Stadium playing field should not be holding their breath.

New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers’ recent devastating knee injury playing on MetLife Stadium’s artificial turf once again raised concerns about the field’s safety. Former Giants wideout Odell Beckham Jr. became the latest player to make an impassioned plea for the NFL to bring in real grass.

Aaron Rodgers infamously tore his Achilles tendon on the MetLife turf just four plays into his Jets career. Over the past few years, several other NFL players have suffered serious leg injuries while playing on New York’s turf. Former Jets players have even expressed fear in returning to play at MetLife Stadium.

None of those pleas will reportedly lead to any changes anytime soon. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the New York Jets and Giants are said to have “no plans to rip out the turf.” The final call is said to belong to both teams’ ownership groups as well as a third-party group that manages the stadium.

The decision is rooted in data. MetLife Stadium reportedly ranked ninth-best among NFL stadiums when it came to minimizing “lower-extremity injuries” during the 2024 season. The stadium surprisingly ranked first in the entire league when the data is limited to only visiting players.

Aaron Rodgers infamously tore his Achilles tendon on the MetLife turf in 2023, just four plays into his Jets career. Over the past few years, several other NFL players have suffered serious leg injuries while playing on New York’s turf. Former Jets players have even expressed fear in returning to play at MetLife Stadium.

But based on the aforementioned numbers from the league, MetLife Stadium may just be suffering from a PR issue.
