The Cleveland Browns introduced new head coach Todd Monken on Tuesday, and one of the most pressing questions he was asked was about his quarterback situation.
Monken was asked if he was committing to Shedeur Sanders as his starting quarterback in 2026. The new head coach was not willing to make that commitment, but he said he was “absolutely” excited about Sanders’ potential.
Todd Monken asked if Shedeur Sanders is his QB1 moving forward, says that’s TBD but he’s “absolutely” excited about him and the other #Browns QBs and players.

In other words, the Browns will likely have another quarterback competition. In addition to Sanders, the Browns still have Dillon Gabriel, and there is also the Deshaun Watson factor lingering. With that much uncertainty, Monken has no reason to box himself into a decision right now.
Monken does seem fairly enthusiastic about working with Sanders. Plus, however deserved the accolade was, Sanders did just make a Pro Bowl as a rookie. He will be in the mix no matter what.
Sanders started seven games for the Browns last season. He threw for 1,400 yards, but had 10 interceptions to 7 touchdowns.
