Tony Romo reportedly unlikely to return in Week 10

The Dallas Cowboys were originally targeting a Week 8 return for Tony Romo, but suddenly we are heading into Week 10 and the veteran has not been cleared. Is he healing more slowly than expected, or are the Cowboys simply dragging things out while Dak Prescott continues to win games?

Our guess is the latter. Whatever the case, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Monday that it would be a “big stretch” for Romo to return against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

#Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters Tony Romo could be active this week. But from my understanding of his rehab, that’s a big stretch.

Monday and Tuesday, Tony Romo will focus on conditioning & change-of-direction. May not even practice fully this week. Doesn’t sound ready.

On Sunday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was once again noncommittal when asked when he anticipates Romo returning and if Prescott will remain the team’s starter regardless.

“We’ve got a great luxury, a wonderful problem to have. We’ve got some real talent at our quarterback position,” Jones said, per Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram. “I think Tony Romo is one of the best quarterbacks that have played this game. My real regret would be to have had him here and not won a Super Bowl with him. He’s that talented. And now look at Dak and how he’s playing, his future, so I just don’t have a problem with this situation.”

The Cowboys demolished the Cleveland Browns on Sunday to improve to 7-1. Prescott completed 21 of 27 passes for 247 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He had a passer rating of 141.8, which was the fifth time in six games he has posted a mark of 114.7 or higher. Need we say more?

Prescott is going to remain the starter as long as the Cowboys continue to win, and his latest remarks about the situation indicate he has now embraced that. If the rookie were to get hurt, Romo would probably be ready to go.
