Report: Trevor Siemian has chance to win Broncos starting QB job
The Denver Broncos are holding an open quarterback competition this offseason, and most people assume that means veteran Mark Sanchez is battling it out with rookie first-round pick Paxton Lynch. But what about Trevor Siemian?
Siemian, a seventh-round pick out of Northwestern last year, probably would have been drafted much higher if he didn’t tear his ACL late in the 2014 season. Earlier this week, Broncos coach Gary Kubiak said it would be unwise to “sleep” on Siemian winning the starting job.
And now this from ESPN’s Jeff Legwold:
Thus far in #Broncos offseason biggest mistake I've seen in what's been said/written about team is notion Trevor Siemian cannot win QB job.

The more people say it/write it, the more proof it is they are not talking to the people who are making the decisions.

Baffling how some believe guy who was eventual Super Bowl champs No. 2 QB for 2 months in '15 has "no shot'' to start #notpayingattention

For what it’s worth, Siemian has more experience in Kubiak’s system than both Sanchez and Lynch. We basically know what Sanchez is capable of, and it is pretty rare that a first-year player wins a starting job. Does that give Siemian the upper hand?
For whatever reason, Sanchez believes the Broncos’ decision to draft Lynch bodes well for Sanchez’s chances of winning the starting job. John Elway has hinted that the rookie is coming along nicely. Prior to Kubiak’s comments this week, most people probably had no idea who Siemian was. That could make him the most dangerous of the starting candidates.
