Mike McCarthy is in the final season of his contract with the Dallas Cowboys, and Troy Aikman doesn’t have a lot of faith in the coach receiving an extension.

The Cowboys lost at home to the Houston Texans 34-10 on Monday night to drop to 3-7. Dallas is now 0-5 at home this season.

This is McCarthy’s fifth season as Dallas’ head coach. He went 6-10 in his first year, but then his teams went 12-5 three years in a row, and won the NFC East in two of those seasons. However, Dallas has gone 1-3 in the postseason under McCarthy.

The postseason disappointments likely kept Cowboys owner Jerry Jones from committing to McCarthy long term. Aikman doesn’t see that changing.

Aikman offered an opinion on the situation late in Dallas’ loss on “Monday Night Football.”

“Mike McCarthy’s a good football coach,” Aikman said while providing commentary for the game. “He’s proven that at Green Bay. He’s proven it here. You win 12 games three years in a row, you’re doing something right. But he didn’t get a contract extension after he had done that. It’s hard to imagine him getting one now.”

McCarthy received a 5-year contract from the Cowboys when he became their head coach prior to the 2020 season. He is in a lame-duck season, and Aikman obviously does not believe McCarthy will be back next season. Of course, Jerry Jones stuck with Jason Garrett for an entire decade. The possibility of the big boss giving McCarthy another shot should not be completely discounted.
