Video: Dustin May leaves start after getting hit by a 106 mph line drive

Dustin May hit by a line drive

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Dustin May had a very short (and painful) night on the mound Wednesday.

May was done for the rest of the evening after just one pitch against the New York Mets at Citi Field in Queens, N.Y., as he was hit in the back by a 106 mph line drive from Mets leadoff hitter A.J. Ewing. He was in clear pain afterward, as he was checked on the mound by a Brewers staff member and his teammates.

After a few moments, May was removed from his start amid concerns that he had suffered an injury.

Here is a video of that scene.

Dustin May took a 106 mph line drive off the bat of A.J Ewing on the first pitch of the game to the shoulder. He seemed to be in severe discomfort and was removed from the game after throwing warmup pitches.

Milwaukee had to dig into its bullpen early following May’s exit, with Robert Gasser taking over on the mound. Gasser answered the call by pitching 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits and two walks while recording six strikeouts. Three other pitchers helped finish the job, as the Brewers overcame May’s early departure to cruise to an 8-1 victory.

Even more good news for Milwaukee is that May seemingly avoided a serious injury.

“In the moment, it didn’t feel great. It took my breath away,” May said after the game, via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.

“I probably could have finished that inning, but better safe than sorry not trying to push through it. Right now, I feel OK. It’s just a bruise. No damage or anything structurally, so that’s good.”

The win over New York got the Brewers back in the win column after two consecutive losses.

The 82-51 Milwaukee will look to close out the Mets series with a win Thursday.
